John Smith

1942–2024

Life story

John was born in Yorkshire in 1942 and moved to London in his twenties, where he built a life with his wife Margaret and their two children.

He worked as a railway engineer for more than thirty years and was the sort of person family and neighbours called when something needed fixing. Quietly practical, patient and rarely in a hurry, John always seemed to have time for people.

His happiest days were simple ones - Sunday lunch with the family, tending tomatoes in the garden, old records playing in the kitchen and summer trips to the coast with the grandchildren.

He is remembered for his dry sense of humour, his kindness and the feeling that everything would somehow be all right once John was there.
